Finding Your Perfect Photographer | Christina Z Photography

Recently, a good friend of mine asked me a favor. She sent me this message:

“Christina I need your help! I need to find a photographer up in Minnesota to take Cadys first birthday pictures. Where do I look? What should I look for? And what is a good price and what is outrageous?? Helllllp me!!”

Of course I jumped on the opportunity to help a girl out. So first I suggested she fly to Florida and let me photographer her beautiful Cady or offered her to buy & I’ll fly.. hehe. She didn’t go for it so on to researching I went.

So here is the information I gave to my friend Molly, and I’m letting you in on our conversation because I think we’re all friends here and you deserve to be armed with this information as well. Continue reading

How I Got Out of My Creative Rut | Christina Z Photography – Orlando, FL

Sometimes You Just Have to Get Out of the Box

I mean really jump out of the box to jump start your creativity again! I have been wanting to photograph at night using car headlights for a while and just hadn’t gotten to it yet. I have to say, when your in a rut of any sort – mine being a creativity rut within my photography, you must do something for yourself. That’s what I had to do, and it really turned out just as imagined it. I plan to a lot more  shoots for myself in the future. My passion is what got me into this biz, so sometimes I need to rejuvenate that passion. Anyways, my step-sister was coming into town and I knew she’d let me get creative. We picked out the perfect outfit, did her hair and make-up, and off we went…

This is a fabulous session I had the honor of doing last year for a dear friend of mine. Ashleigh’s husband was deployed and she wanted to surprise him with some fab photos of herself, and I was just dying to photograph her with their antique truck. We had such a fun time doing this, as always! Take a peak… Continue reading

10 Posing Tips | Christina Z Photography

Some people may feel discouraged about booking a professional photo session because they don’t know how to pose or what to do in front of the camera. You should take comfort in knowing your photographer knows what their doing. I’ve had many clients feel relief when I start giving direction. One couple even said to me, “I’m so glad your posing us, we have 2 signature poses and that is it.” Part of my job as your photographer is to create the photo that you will cherish forever, and that includes posing you. Here are some tips that will even work in your photos at home.

Photography Posing Tips | © Christina Z Photography

  1. Ever hear the phrase, “the camera adds 10 pounds?” If you face square to the camera it will do that, because our shoulders are the widest part of the body. Instead, angel the shoulders slightly. It will give a slimmer profile and you will instantly lose that 10 extra pounds.

  2. It’s a habit for many women (and men too), to lean backwards and lift the chin up. When this is done, you can see right up the nose and mouth, and the eyes tend to be partially closed. Bring your chin down. It will open up the eyes and avoid seeing what’s up the nose.

  3. A tip I learned from having my own family photos done, is  to do the turtle. It may sound a bit strange and feel ever more strange. If you stick your chin forward, elongating your neck it will avoid double chins and slim down the face and neck.

  4. The old saying goes, “if it bends, then bend it.” A photo can look very stiff  if you have straight arms, legs, head, and torso. This can be easily fixed by slightly bending the arms and legs, leaning forward at the waist, tilting the head, and relaxing.

  5. Shift your weight. By shifting your weight to the back foot it will make for a more comfortable pose and align the hips and shoulders. Making the pose fall into place naturally.

  6. Don’t let your arms be glued to the body. This can be avoided by doing something with your hands. Putting a hand in a pocket or on the hip, holding someone’s hand or an object, resting it against a wall, or bringing the arms up overhead.

  7. Avoid putting heads on the same level. Try to place the subjects so their heads are uneven or form a triangle.

  8. Try to shoot the subject from straight on or above. Shooting from below makes even the most gorgeous person look awkward. Shooting from above will make them appear slimmer, eliminate double chins, and provide a beautiful light in their eyes.

  9. Don’t let your face get stiff. Take a deep breath and relax! It will make for much better photos.

  10. One of my biggest pet peeves. Cropping off limbs. If your cropping out anyone’s body ensure that your lines do not fall at the joints (wrists, knees, elbows, etc…) It will appear that the subject’s body doesn’t continue past the frame.

These are tips that you can utilize right at home with your family. I hope this is helpful to professional photographers and mommy-tographers alike. So get out there and feel confident in front & behind the camera!
